Smokejack Southern Barbecue & Grill is a family-owned and operated restaurant, located in the heart of downtown Alpharetta, Georgia. This restaurant was also a recent employer of mine! Smokejack specializes in southern-style, smoked cuisine with a few adaptations. The restaurant was established in 2004 and is still fully running to date. During the peak of the Covid-19 epidemic, the owner, Dave Filipowicz decided to modify the environment of the establishment. He also recently discovered I was in school for Graphic & Web Design.

Dave presented me an opportunity to show him what I could do by developing some environmental graphics for a wall he didn’t know what to do with. This wall is located at the front entrance. I personally felt that the entire restaurant could use a rebrand, so for fun, I developed a new Identity along with the wall design.

The client was satisfied with the original design, but they wanted room for what they would call “The 86 Board.” The 86 Board is a common way to inform the guest of what in the restaurant is currently unavailable. Seeing as this wall is the first thing the guest will spot when they walk into the building, the intent was to draw the eye to the aesthetic of the restaurant and giving guests the opportunity to explore some alternatives that they offered. The end result was less art and more type divided into two sections on the front wall, the wall that faces the bar, I changed the wine glass to a mason jar the side that faces the dining remained the same.

*Rebranding the company logo was only a concept. All environmental design remains in Smokejack today.
