The Palomino Blackwing pencils are historical pencils brought back to life with a twist. Today, they are well-known for paying tribute to iconic individuals or outstanding events that have taken place in history which have defined our creative culture. Blackwing goes even further by giving a percentage of the proceeds to art schools for children, as they know that the young creatives are the future. The revamped pencil company has developed and implemented music and art education programs through the Blackwing Foundation.
My goal was to repackage the pencil box in order to emphasize what the number on the pencil represents. The intent was to express the beginning of the surrealism era. Surrealists utilized a well-known exercise known as exquisite corpse. The number was 54, 54 rue due Chateau in Paris, is the birthplace of Exquisite Corpse. I had the luxury of designing from two totally different ends of the spectrum, one exploring the subconscious mind, the other, structure, and proportions.

This is the original packaging. The issue at hand was that all the packages looked just like this, the only difference was the pencil design. It would be fun if the boxes took it a little further, right?
